Sir Nigel John DermotĀ "Sam"Ā NeillĀ (born 14 September 1947) is a New Zealand actor. His career has included leading roles in both dramas and blockbusters. Considered an "international leading man", he is regarded as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
Born in Northern Ireland to an English mother and New Zealand father, Neill moved toĀ ChristchurchĀ with his family in 1954. He first achieved recognition with his appearance in the filmĀ Sleeping DogsĀ (1977), which he followed with leading roles inĀ My Brilliant CareerĀ (1979),Ā Omen III: The Final Conflict,Ā PossessionĀ (both 1981),Ā Evil AngelsĀ (also known asĀ A Cry in the Dark) (1988),Ā Dead CalmĀ (1989),Ā The Hunt For Red OctoberĀ (1990),Ā The PianoĀ (1993), andĀ In the Mouth of MadnessĀ (1994). He came to international prominence asĀ Dr. Alan GrantĀ inĀ Jurassic ParkĀ (1993), reprising the role inĀ Jurassic Park IIIĀ (2001) andĀ Jurassic World DominionĀ (2022).
Outside of film, Neill has appeared in numerous television series in guest and recurring roles, includingĀ Reilly, Ace of SpiesĀ (1983),Ā The SimpsonsĀ (1994),Ā The TudorsĀ (2007),Ā CrusoeĀ (2008ā2010),Ā Happy TownĀ (2010),Ā Alcatraz (2012), andĀ Rick and MortyĀ (2019). He also starred as the titular characterĀ MerlinĀ inĀ Merlin (1998) andĀ Merlin's ApprenticeĀ (2006) and as Major Chester Campbell in the first two series ofĀ Peaky BlindersĀ (2013ā2014). He has presented and narrated several documentaries.
Neill receives theĀ AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, theĀ Longford Lyell Award, theĀ New Zealand Film Award, and theĀ Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actor. He also has threeĀ Golden GlobeĀ and twoĀ Primetime Emmy AwardĀ nominations.Ā He won theĀ Silver Logie for Most Popular ActorĀ at the 2023 Logies.
